How to Audit Building Cameras for Better Security
A camera system can look complete on a floor plan and still leave a property exposed. A camera may be pointed at the right door but fail to capture a usable face at night. Another may record continuously but retain footage for only a few days because storage was never recalculated after an expansion. Knowing how to audit building cameras helps property teams find these gaps before an incident, tenant complaint, or insurance request puts the system to the test.
For multifamily communities, commercial facilities, and active construction sites, the strongest audit combines a physical walkthrough with a technical review. The goal is not simply to count cameras. It is to confirm that the system supports the real security, operational, and liability needs of the property.
Start the Camera Audit With Building Risk
A useful audit begins with the questions the camera system needs to answer. Which areas require deterrence? Where must staff be able to identify a person, vehicle, or event? Which locations create recurring concerns, such as package theft, unauthorized access, after-hours entry, vehicle damage, or safety incidents?
Walk the site with a current floor plan or property map and identify the locations that matter most. For a multifamily property, that commonly includes leasing offices, main entrances, amenity spaces, package rooms, mail areas, elevators, garages, pool gates, dumpsters, and perimeter access points. Commercial buildings may prioritize public entryways, loading docks, server rooms, inventory areas, cash-handling locations, and employee-only doors.
Risk is not the same at every camera location. A broad overview camera is often appropriate for a parking lot or lobby, while a camera at a controlled entrance may need enough detail to identify a face and verify who used the door. Match the expected evidence to the camera’s purpose. Trying to use one wide-angle camera for both general visibility and positive identification often creates a blind spot in the moments that matter.
How to Audit Building Cameras in the Field
The field walkthrough is where assumptions meet actual conditions. Review every camera from the perspective of the people, vehicles, and activities it is meant to capture. Do this during normal daytime conditions, then repeat critical areas after dark if the property operates at night.
Check whether each camera has a clear, useful view. Landscaping, signage, parked vehicles, new construction, temporary storage, and decorative features can gradually obstruct coverage. Camera housings may also shift over time after vibration, weather, or minor impacts. A view that was correct at installation can become ineffective without anyone noticing.
Pay close attention to lighting. Strong backlight from a glass entrance, headlights in a garage, sun glare, and shadows beneath covered walkways can make a live image look acceptable while washing out the details needed for identification. At night, review whether infrared illumination reaches the intended area and whether reflective surfaces are causing glare. In some locations, improved lighting or a different camera placement will deliver better results than simply installing a higher-resolution camera.
Look for gaps between cameras, particularly at transitions. The path from a parking area to an entrance, an exterior gate to a building door, or a lobby to an elevator is often more valuable than a single isolated viewpoint. Coverage should help staff understand the sequence of events, not just show disconnected images.
During the walkthrough, confirm that cameras are installed at an appropriate height and angle. Cameras mounted too high may capture the tops of heads rather than faces. Cameras mounted too low can be tampered with or blocked. Outdoor devices should be secure, weather-protected, and positioned to avoid direct exposure to likely impacts where possible.
Test Image Quality and Evidence Value
A camera audit should test recorded footage, not only the live view on a monitor. Pull sample video from several times of day and review it at normal playback speed. Then pause on key moments to see whether the system captures useful detail.
At entry doors, can you distinguish a person’s face when they approach, enter, and exit? At vehicle entrances, can you reliably read a license plate when a vehicle is moving through the lane? In a package room, can staff identify the person who removed an item, rather than simply confirm that someone was present?
Resolution matters, but it is only one part of image quality. Lens selection, field of view, lighting, compression settings, frame rate, and camera placement all affect the outcome. A 4K camera covering an entire parking field may provide excellent situational awareness but insufficient detail for identification at the far edge of its view. In that case, a second targeted camera may be the more practical investment.
Also verify camera time stamps. Incorrect dates, time zones, or daylight saving settings can complicate investigations and make it harder to align video with access control events, alarm activity, or witness reports. All cameras and recording equipment should synchronize to a reliable time source.
Review Recording, Retention, and Retrieval
A camera that does not retain footage long enough is not meeting its purpose. Establish a retention target based on property type, incident patterns, insurance expectations, company policy, and available storage. Many facilities need at least 30 days of retention, but the right period depends on the operation and the time it typically takes for an incident to be reported.
Verify retention using actual recorded dates, not an assumed storage calculation. Adding cameras, increasing resolution, changing frame rates, or enabling continuous recording can reduce available retention without an obvious warning. Conversely, motion-based recording may extend retention but can miss relevant context if motion rules are poorly configured.
Test how quickly authorized staff can locate and export footage. A property manager should not have to search through a confusing system interface while responding to a police request or resident concern. Confirm that video exports play on standard devices, include the necessary time and camera information, and can be shared according to company policy.
Document who has access to live and recorded video. Limit administrative permissions, remove former employees and vendors, and use individual credentials rather than shared logins whenever the platform supports them. Video often contains sensitive information about residents, tenants, employees, and visitors. Access should be useful for operations without becoming unnecessarily broad.
Check the Network and System Health
Modern IP camera systems depend on the network as much as the cameras themselves. During an audit, check for offline cameras, intermittent connections, repeated recording errors, and cameras operating at reduced quality because of bandwidth limitations. A camera that drops offline for a few minutes each day may be a serious gap even if it appears healthy during a quick inspection.
Review switch capacity, Power over Ethernet availability, cable condition, and network segmentation. Cameras should have adequate power and bandwidth, particularly where multiple high-resolution cameras share a switch or uplink. Aging cabling, overloaded equipment, and poorly planned network changes can create instability that is easy to miss until footage is needed.
Cybersecurity belongs in the same review. Change default credentials, apply appropriate firmware updates, disable services that are not required, and confirm that remote access is controlled. The right approach depends on the camera platform, network design, and the client’s IT policies, but unmanaged remote access should never be treated as a convenience feature.
If the camera system integrates with access control, intercoms, or building automation, test those workflows as well. A video feed associated with a door event can save valuable time during an investigation, but only if names, time stamps, and recordings align correctly.
Create an Action Plan Instead of a Camera Wish List
An audit is most valuable when it produces clear priorities. Separate immediate corrections from planned improvements. A blocked camera at a primary entrance, failed recorder drive, incorrect time stamp, or expired user account should be addressed quickly. Larger needs, such as garage coverage expansion, storage upgrades, network modernization, or replacement of aging analog cameras, can be organized into a phased capital plan.
For each finding, record the camera location, issue, operational impact, recommended correction, priority, and responsible party. Include photos or screen captures where helpful. This gives property managers, facilities teams, IT leaders, and ownership a shared view of what needs attention and why.
Avoid treating every issue as a reason to replace the entire system. Some properties need a full modernization to support better resolution, remote management, and retention. Others can improve performance substantially through camera repositioning, lighting adjustments, storage changes, firmware maintenance, or targeted additions. The right decision depends on system age, condition, budget, and the property’s risk profile.
For properties managing multiple low-voltage systems, a coordinated review can prevent one fix from creating another problem. Camera placement may affect access control wiring, Wi-Fi coverage, structured cabling routes, or construction schedules. The best time to identify a missing angle, failing drive, or weak nighttime image is during a planned audit, when there is time to correct it thoughtfully. A well-maintained camera system gives teams more than recorded video. It gives them dependable information when they need to make decisions quickly.
