A card reader alone does not secure an opening. The complete opening includes the door, frame, lock, request-to-exit device, door position monitoring, power supply, controller, cabling, and programming.
Credentials Should Match the Users and the Environment
Cards and key fobs remain practical, affordable credentials for many properties. They are familiar to users, fast to issue, and suitable for high-traffic entrances. Mobile credentials can add convenience for employees, residents, and managers who prefer to use a smartphone rather than carry another item.
Keypads can be useful for limited-use spaces or as a secondary verification step. Biometric readers may fit specialized environments where stronger identity verification is necessary, though they require careful evaluation of privacy expectations, user acceptance, cost, and operating conditions.
There is no universal best credential. A busy apartment community may benefit from a mix of fobs for residents and mobile credentials for staff. A small office may find cards and scheduled access rules entirely sufficient. The right choice depends on user volume, turnover, budget, management workflow, and the consequences of unauthorized entry.
Plan for New Construction and Occupied Properties Differently
New construction gives owners and general contractors the opportunity to coordinate access control early with doors, electrical work, structured cabling, networking, fire alarm requirements, and architectural finishes. Early coordination helps avoid late changes, exposed wiring, incompatible door hardware, and costly rework.
For occupied properties, the priorities are different. Installation must protect daily operations, limit disruption, and account for existing conditions that may not be documented accurately. A phased approach is often the most practical path. Teams can begin with exterior doors, high-risk areas, or spaces with recurring access issues, then expand as budgets and operating schedules allow.
An upgrade also provides a good moment to retire outdated credentials and clarify who has administrative authority. Many organizations inherit legacy systems with inactive users, inconsistent naming conventions, and unclear responsibility for access changes. Cleaning up those records is just as valuable as replacing hardware.

Access control is more useful when it works alongside related building technology. A camera positioned at a controlled entrance can help verify events associated with a credential transaction. Intercom and visitor-entry systems can support controlled access without leaving doors unlocked. Integration should have a clear purpose. Connecting every system merely because it is possible can add cost and complexity without solving a meaningful problem. The strongest designs focus on specific operating needs, such as allowing a property manager to review a door event and associated video, or allowing staff to manage credentials across multiple buildings from a central location.
Cybersecurity also belongs in the conversation. Network-connected controllers, cloud-managed platforms, and mobile credentials require sound user permissions, secure network configuration, software updates, and a plan for administrator turnover. A system that works well at turnover can still become unreliable without ongoing attention. Door hardware wears, batteries fail, staff roles change, software updates become available, and property operations evolve. Administrators also need training that fits their daily responsibilities. A front-office team may need to issue resident credentials and review basic reports.
